Top Bathroom Design Trends for 2023

This year’s bathroom trends focus on relaxation and elevating the bathroom with decor and accents. I like to talk about trends but will not necessarily put them into practice for every flip project. Before moving forward with a design or renovation that follows a current trend, ensure it aligns with your overall plan and budget and fits the market you’re in. Especially when you are flipping houses trends are something to note but not necessarily follow.

Let’s get into the top five trends designers recommend for 2023:

1 – Walk-in Showers

Walk-in showers used to be considered a more luxurious addition to bathrooms, but now it is almost a given in new construction homes. A walk-in shower is more than a beautiful feature. It provides a new level of self-care and wellness, something we have been emphasizing more and more every year.

Pro Tip – A walk-in shower may be incorporated into a flip, if the space allows. Most often these are in a master suite, which may be an entirely new space created during the renovation. Ideal size would be 5 feet but a 4 foot shower can also work if the space is more limited. Another wow for potential buyers would be smart tile choices and other upgrades like a rain shower, shelf niche and even a bench.

Here are a few unique walk-in shower ideas:

  • Multiple shower heads
  • Patterned floor tiles paired with solid tile walls
  • Accent wall of tile in shower for interest

2 – Removing Oversized Tubs

For some people the stand-alone tub simply takes up valuable space. There has been a debate in the past few years about the true value in having one. Some renovation plans may even include removing it and replacing it with a walk-in shower. While I’m all in favor of a bath offering as many amenities as possible I am inclined to include a tub when space allows.

Pro Tip – When flipping carefully consider removing a tub from an existing bathroom if it’s impacting the layout. Large, built-in tubs with dated tile surrounds can make way for a sleek soaking tub. When thinking of adding the most value to a home while flipping and appealing to as many buyers as possible, the presence of a tub can help to elevate the resale value.

3 – Spa inspired spaces

For a 2023 bathroom design theme, think: serene. A spa-like design is something that has wide appeal. While some may prefer the walk-in shower, others may want a soaking tub (or both). That means making more minor changes and design choices to create a relaxing and calming environment. Paint your walls white or a warm off-white, and choose tiles and cabinets that are a similar white. Even your towels should be white!

Some spa features in your bathroom renovations this year include open shelving, accent pieces like side tables or wood benches, candle and greenery.

Pro Tip – Soothing spaces include reducing clutter. Transitioning your everyday use items like soap, lotion and shampoo into their own set of cohesive dispensers, you’ll be amazed at the result. This trick packs a major design punch and is a breeze to execute.

4 – Wood accents

Natural elements and materials create a feeling of warmth in the space. Wood cabinets and vanities bring a spa-like feel as well with their organic feel. Wood in the bathroom has also led to the rise in the organic modern style trending over the last few years.

Using wood tones in a bath isn’t reserved for only the vanity. Mirrors, shelving and bath caddies can all bring in just the right amount of detail.

Pro Tip – There are more options to choose form than ever before hen it comes to wood vanities. Whatever size or style you’re looking for there is a wood vanity for every budget.

5 – Custom combinations

There is unlimited possibility when it comes to the smaller touches in a bathroom. Mirrors, lighting, hardware and fixtures offer endless choices.

Create a sleek, classic look with chrome. Matte black touches add a modern vibe. Or you can choose to mix finishes between all the elements.

Pro Tip – To keep the decisions simple I often choose one finish for the entire space. If I’m mixing options installing fixtures in one finish and making different choices for the mirror, light and hardware gives just the right balance and repitition.

Following the 2023 Trends for Your Flip Project

As always, trends are a fun and interesting way to uplevel a design, not a one-size-fits-all roadmap. While some of these may make sense in your flip project, others may not.

Inspiration and new ways to create functional spaces will make your project stand out. By keeping your return on investment numbers in mind and always adding value these upgrades will be sure to impress.
